But Wait - 3 more things

 As is typical, when we put more miles on the car we found more issues (44 miles so far).  Three more issues to be exact.

First was poor acceleration.  Seemed to come and go.  But last time we had it out, decided to "not overlook the obvious" and check the oil in the carbs.  They were almost dry.  Filled them up, then ran like a champ.

Second was pulling to the right when braking.  Adjusted front brakes, still there.  Took them apart, could not find a root cause.  Decided to sand paper the shoes and drums, plus swap drums from side to side.  Problem appears to be gone now!

Third was more challenging, running hot.  We knew gauge read too high.  But we also felt like the car was running too hot, esp when idling.  TR2's and TR3's are known for not moving enough air.  But we also had not done anything to the radiator.

More checking ended up first finding a bunch of maple seeds in the radiator.  First picture is from opening radiator cap after cooling down.  Second is the variety of seeds we found by simply picking them out through the radiator filler neck.




Then after a drive we found coolant leaking from below the filler neck:



So we bit the bullet and removed the front clip to get the radiator out.  Will try first to get radiator repaired locally, if not possible then may have to buy a new one.  While we are at it we are also buying a "hurricane fan" from Macy's Garage, touted to move a lot more air than the original.

Also decided to replace the temperature gauge that read too high.  We found a source of new gauges for a decent price, new supplier in England using the original tooling.

We are hopeful of ending up with a nice cool running TR2!

Good Progress for First Week

 Monday we moved the TR2 from the trailer to the lift in the shop.  And unloaded all the grocery sacks and coffee cans full of parts.  Lots of time just spent trying to get oriented to where everything is at! New Project Car

 This blog will cover a 1955 Triumph TR2 that Ray and I bought from a local British car friend David in KY.  He bought the car in 2009 from the owner in Henderson KY.  He dismantled the car and had it painted.  He also had a guy named Too Tall Tim make a new interior for the car.  Then he lost interest,  He claims, and we think he's right, that he has the vast majority of the parts needed to reassemble the car.  He also claimed it "ran fine when parked".   This is how the car has sat for many years after paint.  David did a nice job of organizing the parts into grocery bags and coffee cans.  Here's some views after we got everything loaded into the box trailer: We are going to initially leave the car and parts on the trailer until we work on the second car.  There are also lots of other parts that we have in storage next door (painted doors, hood, boot lid plus interior seats and panels).  As they say, just some assembly r...

Fettling

 Fettling is the British term for continuous trial fitting and adjusting things until they line up right.  We did some major fettling to the four fenders and chrome trim on the TR2 in the last few weeks.  This also includes installing the stone guards that are at the lower front of the rear fenders.  Here's some pics: We had a lot of loose bolts and some missing bolts.  Most of the missing bolts were because the holes didn't line up - more fettling!  We are pleased with the way it turned out. The front brakes were tackled - took about 2 hours, all parts were there, piece of cake! There's even a grease fitting for the wheel bearings!  Greased all of the front end too. So next tackled the rear brakes.  Whole different story!  Removed brake drums, there's no shoes or springs in there.  Then found out you can't buy brake shoes for these early cars with 9 inch Lockheed rear brakes.  If we had old shoes we could get them relined, but didn...
